more about Alma Moroni Cross, born in 1836, died in 1914, he was a private in the 13th New Hampshire Infantry Division during the Civil War.
In 1860 Alma (Almon), a farmer, is 23 and lives in Clarksville with his wife Rebeca 20 (Rebecca Poore, b.1840, d.1909, married in 1859 in Stewartstown), and one year old daughter Iris. His older brother Ferrin and his family live next door. By 1861, Alma lives in Stewartstown where they will raise four children (Iris born in Clarksville, and Lamira Sarah b.1861, Almond Job b.1863 and Ferrin Abijah, b.1867, all born in West Stewartstown).
Alma will join the army as Private August 12, 1862 and will commit for a period of three years as was the norm. He will loose his older brother during the Civil War. Ferrin Abijah Cross, born in 1829, residence in Clarksville, dies June 03, 1864 at the battle of Cold Harbor; at dawn, when three Union corps attacked the Confederate works on the southern end of the line and were easily repulsed with heavy casualties. General Grant wrote in his Memoirs: ”I have always regretted that the last assault at Cold Harbor was ever made. ... No advantage whatever was gained to compensate for the heavy loss we sustained."
Alma's other brother, Stephen Franklin Cross, born in 1830, died in 1864 (interestingly Stephen is not listed on the pension records and was probably not enlisted in the army; little is know about Stephen except that in 1860, a farmer, he lives in Stewartstown with his wife Lois Sephine Tyler, 16 years old, just married that year, and his mother 70).
By 1870, Alma and his family live in West Stewartstown, he is back farming after spending 3 years in the army. By 1880, Alma 44, is divorced, and has moved to Pittsburg were he will still be in 1900 and 1910 (in 1900, Alma is 64 years old, divorced since at least 1880, living with some helpers for his farm).
Of note, Alma, Ferrin, and Stephen, are the three youngest sons of Abijah Cross (b.1790. d.1837 and Sally Ferrin (b.1790. d.1872), m.1815 Bridgewater, Grafton, NH.)
